Simplified certification makes it easier than ever before to deliver projects performing through LEED and WELL.

At Hearn & Hearn Consulting, we believe that buildings should do more than just meet environmental standards; they should actively enhance the well-being of the people who use them. That’s why we’re excited about the growing synergy between two of the world’s most trusted building certification systems: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and WELL (WELL Building Standard).

Traditionally, pursuing both certifications was viewed as time-consuming and a complex process; however, with the introduction of the LEED + WELL Streamlined Certification Process, project teams can now navigate dual certification more efficiently, without compromising value, quality, or performance.

One Vision, Two Certifications

Launched through a strategic partnership between the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the LEED + WELL Crosswalk initiative offers a shared framework that integrates sustainability and human health goals.

This collaboration reflects a larger shift in the construction and real estate industry: as developers, designers, and consultants respond to rising demand for both eco-conscious design and occupant wellness, the need for a harmonized certification pathway has never been more relevant.

Difference Between LEED and WELL

LEED and WELL are globally recognized standards, but they serve different purposes:

LEED focuses on the environmental performance of buildings, such as energy efficiency, water conservation, material selection, and sustainable site practices.

WELL centers on human health and well-being, evaluating air and water quality, lighting, comfort, nourishment, mental health, and more.

In short, LEED focuses on environmental sustainability, while WELL prioritizes the health and well-being of building occupants.

The Power of the Crosswalk

The cornerstone of this integration is the LEED + WELL Crosswalk, a practical tool that maps WELL features to specific LEED credits and vice versa. It’s designed to help project teams identify overlapping requirements and align their strategies from the start, accelerating goal setting, and streamlining implementation.

There are three flexible pathways within the Crosswalk:

  1. Interchangeable: Either LEED or WELL achievement may satisfy both standards.

  2. LEED-to-WELL: LEED credit can fulfill a WELL feature.

  3. WELL-to-LEED: WELL feature can fulfill a LEED credit.

This flexibility means teams can reduce documentation duplication, improve coordination, and tailor compliance strategies without extra workload.

Why Building Green is More Important Than Ever

Pursuing LEED and WELL certification together delivers a powerful combination of environmental and human-centric benefits that contribute to long-term value, regulatory alignment, and market differentiation:

  • Reduces environmental footprint and operational costs

  • Enhances building performance, resilience, and efficiency

  • Improves occupant well-being, productivity, and health

  • Strengthens ESG reporting and sustainability credentials

  • Attracts high-quality tenants and forward-thinking investors

  • Demonstrates leadership in sustainable, wellness-centered design

  • Increases marketability and access to green financing or incentives

By pursuing both LEED and WELL, buildings meet a higher standard, one that balances environmental responsibility with human-centric design. With the introduction of the streamlined pathway, achieving both is now simpler, faster, and more attainable.
